There are two steps you need to take to be able to own your own gun in Queensland. First you need to get a weapons licence in Queensland which allows you to operate a weapon. Then you need to get a permit to acquire which means you can buy and own a weapon in Queensland. Each of those two steps are divided into various sub-steps themselves.

Applying for a weapons licence in Queensland

Here’s how to apply for a firearms weapon licence and permit to acquire in QLD.

Step One: Meet the requirements for a firearms licence in Qld

Before you apply for a firearms weapons licence it’s important to make sure that you meet the criteria and have all of the relevant documents. Here’s what you’ll need.

  • Evidence of a genuine reason for requiring a licence and supporting documents such as a signed permission letter from a property owner or proof of current financial membership at a QLD firearms club
  • Meet the personal eligibility requirements, including being a fit and proper person
  • Proof of address 
  • Access to weapon storage that meets the requirements
  • Proof that a relevant and approved weapons safety course has been completed within 12 months of the application being submitted

Step Two: Submit the weapon licence application 

In Queensland, a weapons licence application can be submitted online or on paper. Make sure you read the instructions carefully and submit everything that’s asked to prevent a processing delay.

Step Three: Attend Australia Post

Once your application has been submitted you’ll receive an email asking you to visit a participating Australia Post outlet to show your proof of ID and have a free passport quality photo taken.

Applying for a permit to acquire in Queensland

Once you have a Queensland firearm weapons licence you can then apply for a permit to acquire. The application for this can be done online and or using a paper copy of Form 28.
